Text
Dorothy Iannone (1933–2022) was a gentle but determined warrior for the liberation of art and society from rigid moral concepts. With her courageous, personal work, she ranks among the pioneers of sexual and artistic emancipation in the 20th century. It is only fitting that her idiosyncratic and autobiographical multimedia oeuvre defies classification within the traditional categories of art history. It can be traced somewhere between Fluxus, Pop Art, and Nouveau Réalisme, yet all these classifications fall short. Iannone is an artist and feminist entirely in her own right.
Iannone got her start in the US and lived in Europe, mostly in Germany, starting in 1967. While her early paintings were rooted in Abstract Expressionism, she later developed her own distinctive visual language, combining image and text in bold, contrasting colors to tell her stories. Her compositions are spread out across the canvas in a flat, ornamental way. She filled her paintings with archetypal figures of lust and desire. Her figures unapologetically communicate their desires and anxieties, thus revealing a certain fearless vulnerability. Iannone herself often described her narratives, which span various media, as depictions of a spiritual and sexual “ecstatic unity.” With this, Iannone often challenged her contemporaries. Again and again, her work, which is bursting with love, was suspected of being pornographic, causing the artist to face the police, censorship, confiscations, and the cancellation of exhibitions.
From the start, Iannone worked on paintings and drawings, adding sculptures in the 1960s, followed by artist’s books, audio works, and, eventually, video sculptures. Her legendary Singing Boxes, in which she combined audio, painting, objects, and texts into small Gesamtkunstwerke, gave rise in the 1970s to her painted Video Boxes, in which reality and painterly imagination merge in touching ways. In her series I Was Thinking of You (from 1975), for example, we see a video recording of the artist’s face during masturbation, around which an erotic-sexual imagination was painted. This is typical of Iannone’s multimedia approach, which is concerned with perceiving—and addressing—people on all sensory levels. Even cooking became an art form for Iannone and was immortalized in her own cookbook. Iannone’s quest for other dimensions of perception also inspired her to practice Tantric Buddhism. The artist also had a dedicate room for meditation at home which was later on donated to Dharma Mati (Rigpa Zentrum) in Berlin.

Her encounter with Dieter Roth, with whom she had an intense love affair and, after its end, a lifelong friendship, was to have a lasting impact on her life and work. Roth became her eternal muse. Many works refer explicitly to this long-term partner, turning the private into the general and political. Eroticism, sexuality, desire, rejection, union, and the spiritual dimensions of all these facets of human life can be identified as the major themes of Iannone’s practice. The artist once reflected on the explicit autobiographical dimension of her work: “There is practically no difference between me and my work. Both are about the longing for ecstatic unity and a journey to unconditional love.”
In recent years, Iannone’s work has been honored with major retrospectives at the Centre Pompidou, the Louisiana Museum, the Camden Art Centre, the Berlinische Galerie (who now keeps most of the artist’s archive), and the Migros Museum. In 2026, the CA2M in Madrid will host the next retrospective. Since 2025, Galerie Judin represents The Estate Of Dorothy Iannone in close collaboration with Air de Paris, the artist’s gallery of many years.
