About
Michael Buthe, born in Sonthofen in 1944 and died in Bonn in 1994, is undoubtedly one of the most multifaceted artists of post-war German art. It is an artist’s life between concept and ecstasy, between Orient and Occident – and always in touch with his time. Almost three decades after his death, Buthe’s work and life continues to fascinate and enchant viewers.
The sheer individuality of Buthe’s work and repository of allusions makes it impossible to place him in any artistic group or movement. But it would be a mistake to think of him as an anachronistic figure, isolated from his contemporaries and detached from the concerns of his age. He should rather be seen as a soloist in the choir of artistic voices singing in unison around him. For his work did address the same pressing questions that preoccupied his contemporaries; only, his idiosyncrasies inevitably make him stand out from what was mostly a homogeneous crowd. As is always the case with important artists, we are dealing with an oeuvre that is firmly rooted in its time, but unlike any other created during that period.

After a year of studying at the Werkkunstschule Kassel, Buthe moved to the local Staatliche Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in 1965. A first exhibition at Galerie Ricke showcased his early, conceptual works. It was precisely with these works – and at just 25 years of age – that Buthe made his international exhibition debut shortly thereafter in Harald Szeemann’s legendary exhibition Live in Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form (1969). On display was, among other things, a torn white fabric painting created that same year, which today is in the collection of Tate Modern in London. Although the torn fabric seems to testify to spontaneity, the conceptual intention predominates in this series of works. Several sketches on graph paper with exact measurements have survived; they impressively demonstrate the precision and attention to detail with which Buthe worked throughout his whole life.
Buthe moved to Cologne in 1968. Despite countless trips, the Rhineland art metropolis was henceforth the focal point of his work and life. Two years later, the artist undertook his first trip to Morocco – which could not have been more momentous. Buthe’s work became more playful, colorful and spiritual. From then on, the artist was drawn to North Africa and the Middle East time and again. Morocco, where the artist had worked in changing studios since 1972, became his second home.
As a result, Orient and Occident merged in Buthe’s work, just as art and life had merged before. The frequent traveling was accompanied by another creative caesura: not only in terms of motifs and style did the artist want to convey what he had seen, experienced and felt, he also wanted to integrate it all as physically as possible into his art. Thus collage and assemblage, often in combination with painting and drawing, became the decisive means of expression. From this time on, Buthe’s environments also emerged, challenging many senses.
In 1981 Buthe was appointed guest professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he took up a regular professorship two years later. During this time, the artist moved into a spacious studio in an abandoned power station in the southeast of Cologne.
Buthe’s works have found their way into the collections of many important museums, including the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Tate Modern in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The artist has been featured in documenta four times – more than almost any other artist.
Galerie Judin entered into a collaboration with the Michael Buthe Estate in 2018. The gallery is also editing the artist’s catalogue raisonné, published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König. After the first volume on the diaries (2021), the volume on the conceptual early work is currently being compiled.
